Following a day of combat, the army of Witch-king overpowered the Gondor warriors and took Osgiliath. Faramir withdrew to the Causeway Forts, whose defense continued for another day despite several defenders suffering injuries or losing their lives. In order to prevent the retreat over Pelennor Fields from becoming a rout, Faramir made the decision to remain with the rear guard. The Orcs overtook the force as it approached Minas Tirith, and a poisoned arrow severely injured Faramir and Haradrim. Luckily, the withdrawal was effectively covered by a cavalry sortie led by Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth, uncle of Faramir, and Gandalf. Faramir was brought back to Denethor by Imrahil, who informed him of the heroic actions of his son. Looking in the palantír, Denethor thought the Ring was taken and the end was close, regretting that he had sent his son off in unnecessary danger without his consent. He therefore gave his attendants instructions to construct a funeral pyre for both himself and his son. The Hobbit, Peregrin Took (who was then working for the Steward as payment for death of Boromir), protested that Faramir was still alive, but Denethor went on with his plans and let the Hobbit leave his service. Terrified, Pippin hastened to warn Beregond, one of the Tower Guards, and Gandalf. A number of servants were killed when Beregond prevented the pyre from being lit because he loved his captain so much that he left his post and risked his life to protect him. As Faramir moaned to his father in his fevered visions, Pippin returned with Gandalf, who stepped in and pulled him from the pyre. Beregond positioned himself in front of Faramir as Denethor pulled out a dagger in an attempt to retake him. Denethor set the pyre on fire and burned himself alive after realizing he would not prevail.
