A group of Northern Orcs lived in the caves of Goblin-town, close to the High Pass, and were ruled by the huge-headed Great Goblin. They preyed on visitors who took a different, simpler route close to main entrance of Goblin-town until they started to shun it. At the summit of the High Pass, the Orcs created a second gate that opened into a cave they named the Front Porch.
The Great Goblin occasionally asked his Orcs to catch fish for him in the shadowy lake beneath the Mountains, close to Goblin-town. Gollum occasionally killed those Orcs. When Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarves of Thorin and Company were taken prisoner on the Front Porch in the summer of TA 2941, they were taken to the big hall of the Great Goblin, where he was sat on a flat stone and surrounded by armed guards. The Great Goblin was furious and immediately leaped to attack Thorin when it was discovered that he was carrying the Elvish blade Orcrist, which the Orcs dreaded and dubbed as -- Biter. All of the cave-lamps were instantly extinguished, and a blade that was -- bright as blue flame -- emerged. Gandalf now wielded Glamdring, Beater as the Orcs nicknamed it. The Great Goblin jumped down in front of the Dwarves as they were fleeing and assaulted Gandalf, who was leading the group. Then, in retaliation, Gandalf killed the great lord of the cave by stabbing him.
The Misty Mountains Orcs were incensed at the demise of the Great Goblin . The Dwarf Dáin II had killed father of Bolg, Azog, and he had gathered a vast army of Orcs and Wargs. Thorin and Company were pursued by army of Bolg to the Lonely Mountain, where they engaged in combat with the Dwarves, Elves, and Lake-men in the Battle of Five Armies.
