One of greatest heroes of Middle-earth, Ecthelion, also known as Ecthelion of the Fountain, was a powerful lord of Gondolin during the First Age. Although he may have lived in Aman and as one of the disciples of Fingolfin, the majority of early life of Ecthelion is unclear. He is known to have survived the perilous Helcaraxë encounter. He participated in the Battle of the Lammoth and Dagor Aglareb after surviving the grinding ice. Before relocating to Gondolin in FA 116, he settled in Vinyamar in Nevrast as a devotee of Turgon. Later on, he rose to become the Lord of the Fountains. Due to the desire of Aredhel for the freedom she enjoyed in Valinor, Ecthelion, Glorfindel, Egalmoth, and the White Lady of the Ñoldor fled the Hidden City two hundred years after Gondolin was wrought. They were told to take her to Hithlum, where she would meet Fingon, her older brother. Aredhel told them to turn south when they arrived at the Ford of Brithiach because she wanted to meet the Sons of Fëanor. As a result, Ecthelion and his friends arrived in North Doriath and attempted to enter Doriath, but were denied entry by the wardens within the Girdle of Melian. They had no choice but to travel the perilous route between the haunted valleys of Ered Gorgoroth. The riders were lost from Aredhel after becoming entangled in a web of shadows close to Nan Dungortheb, the Valley of Dreadful Death. They later looked for her in vain, but were chased by the fallen offspring of Ungoliant who lived there. The three lords barely made it out alive, and they were met with sadness when they returned to Gondolin without the princess.
