After ascending the Endless Stair from the depths of Moria, Gandalf the Grey and the Balrog faced off in the Battle of the Peak, which took place atop Zirakzigil. Following their battle at the Khazad-dûm Bridge, both Gandalf and the Balrog plummeted into the abyss. Gandalf nearly froze in the bottomless water after being scorched by the fire of Balrog as he descended. He spent days pursuing his enemy through pitch-black tunnels, climbing the Endless Stair to the summit of Durins Tower in living rock of Zirakzigil. There, they fought for two days at the top of the Silvertine, above the clouds. Above the mists of the world, on Celebdil, they fought in a confined area. The sun was shining brightly, but clouds covered everything below, giving the impression that anyone looking up would see lightning strikes and hear thunder. Around them, a thick cloud of steam and vapour rose, and ice began to fall like rain. There, they battled until Gandalf finally overthrew his foe, breaking the mountainside as it collapsed. Then Gandalf was taken by darkness, and he passed away. The Endless Stair was destroyed in the conflict, and Durins Tower lay in ruins. It had taken ten days for the whole fight, from the fight on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm until the mutual death of Balrog and Gandalf.
