Thranduil placed Orcrist, which had been seized in Mirkwood, atop tomb of Thorin following the Battle of Five Armies and death of Thorin. As Bilbo and Gandalf said their goodbyes, Bilbo presented Thranduil with a pearl and silver necklace. Bilbo was also given the title of -- elf-friend -- by the king. In order to report escape of Gollum from Mirkwood, Thranduil dispatched his son Legolas and other Elves to Rivendell during the War of the Ring. Later, people of Thranduil and the Dwarves were able to make amends thanks to the relationship that the Dwarf Gimli and Legolas had steadily developed. Later, when the Dol Guldur soldiers stormed Mirkwood, Thranduil defeated them by repelling their attack. He and Celeborn agreed that the southern portion of Mirkwood would be considered East Lórien. The Beornings and Woodmen were handed the vast forest between Mirkwood and East Lórien, while Thranduil seized the northern area up to the Mountains of Mirkwood. Thranduil also changed the name of Mirkwood to Eryn Lasgalen, the Wood of Greenleaves, at this time. Thranduil established the Mountains of Mirkwood as the southern border of his realm upon the fall of Sauron, and his realm continued to thrive well into the Fourth Age. Either he later left Middle-earth and went to the Undying Lands, or he remained as the ruler of the Great Forest.
