After Aragorn and Gandalf the Grey first met in 2956, they grew close. Following the guidance of Gandalf, Aragorn and the Rangers started to protect the little area known as the Shire, which was populated by the small, pastoral Hobbits. He was referred to as Strider by the people living just outside the boundaries of Shire. Aragorn made epic voyages between TA 2957 and TA 2980, serving in the forces of Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor and King Thengel of Rohan. In addition to gaining invaluable expertise that he would later employ in the War of the Ring, several of his assignments assisted in boosting morale in the West and fending off the mounting threat posed by Sauron and his allies. Aragorn went by the name Thorongil, or Eagle of the Star, in Gondor and Rohan while serving these lords in disguise. In 2980, he led an assault on the long-standing City of the Corsairs with a small Gondoran fleet, burning several of their ships and overthrowing the Captain of the Haven in a combat on the quays. To the dismay of his men, Thorongil departed Gondor after the triumph at Umbar and traveled east. When he returned to Lothlórien later in 2980, he saw Arwen again. Arwen gave her hand in marriage to him on the hill of Cerin Amroth, renouncing her Elvish ancestry and accepting the Gift of Ilúvatar: Death. Aragorn also handed her the Ring of Barahir, the heritage of his House.
