The fourth son of Fëanor, Caranthir, also called Caranthir the Dark, was an Elf who was the harshest and easily enraged of his seven brothers. Caranthir, like his brothers, had sworn to retrieve the Silmarils belonging to his father, which the Dark Lord Morgoth had taken in Aman. After making this oath, the seven brothers traveled to Middle-earth in the First Age, where they founded realms in exile, fought the forces of Morgoth, occasionally engaged their own Elvish kind in combat, and ultimately brought about their own destruction. Realm of Caranthir was on the shores of Lake Helevorn, and his dominion, known as Dor Caranthir, was located in Thargelion in East Beleriand. He became very rich by controlling a large portion of the trade that passed via the Dwarf-Road since his realm shared borders with the mighty Dwarvish Kingdoms of Nogrod and Belegost in the Blue Mountains. When Orcs invaded the Edain lady Haleth and her people, the Haladin, he saved them. After witnessing the courage of Men and their chivalry, he offered the Haladin settlement in the North; however, Haleth thanked him, declined, and departed, later relocating to Brethil. Caranthir was compelled to leave Thargelion in FA 455, following the Dagor Bragollach, and he and his brother Amrod went south. The sons of Ulfang, Uldor, Ulfast, and Ulwarth pledged loyalty to Caranthir two years later, but were faithless later in the Nírnaeth Arnoediad. The Second Kinslaying in Menegroth, an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve a Silmaril from Elven King Dior of Doriath, claimed the lives of Caranthir, his brothers Celegorm, and Curufin.
