Fíli and Kíli were Dwarvern brothers and the youngest of thirteen Dwarves who, together with Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins, set out with the company of Thorin Oakenshield to retake the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. They were nephews of Thorin, the older brother of their mother, Dís; they were also nephews of Frerin, grandsons of Thráin II, and great-grandsons of Thrór. Fíli stood out for having the longest nose of all the Dwarves in the company of Thorin; they were frequently sent scouting or searching, and it was they who discovered the Front Porch while in the Misty Mountains. The Elvenking Thranduil imprisoned Fíli and Kíli after they came into contact with spiders with the other Dwarves. Bilbo helped them escape the prisons, and they rode down the river in barrels until they arrived at Lake-town. While the others rested by the river, the brothers went to Lake-town with Thorin and Bilbo. Along with Balin and Bilbo, Fíli and Kíli searched Ravenhill and located the Front Gate at the base of the Lonely Mountain. They also located the side entrance to the mountain with Bilbo. Both brothers and Thorin were subsequently buried with honor after both brothers were killed in the Battle of Five Armies while protecting the mortally wounded Thorin Oakenshield. Both Fíli and Kíli played fiddles and donned blue hoods when traveling. They each carried a spade, which they probably used for foraging and to help construct barriers, traps, and firepits. Some readers assume that Kíli was proficient with a bow, even if the novels do not mention it.
