Forces of Melkor attacked Gondolin in FA 510, aided by treachery of Maeglin. In an attempt to ambush the adversaries, Glorfindel and his remaining supporters defended against the Orcs from the Great Market. They were, however, ambushed themselves and engaged in combat until a fire-drake showed up. Glorfindel and his people managed to cut their way out, but the Orcs pursued them. The house of Harp came to their aid after defying their deceitful lord, Salgant. One of the final houses to engage in combat was the Golden Flower House, which regrouped at the Place of the Fountain. Until Egalmoth showed up and Ecthelion was killed in battle with the first Lord of the Balrogs, the High-Captain of Angband Gothmog, Glorfindel continued to side with Tuor in protecting the Square. Glorfindel valiantly held the rear and lost more of his followers there while the Gondolindrim escaped by secret way of Idril after King Turgon was also slained. A Balrog with an Orc-contingent came upon the refugees as they fled through Cirith Thoronath. His followers looked on in disbelief as Glorfindel raced forward to confront the demon. He successfully hewed the iron helm of Balrog while defending himself against its whip and claws. The demon tumbled backwards towards the cliff after he pierced its belly at the last second, but the Balrog caught Glorfindel by the hair and he fell with it. Thorondor, King of the Eagles, later carried up body of Glorfindel when he soared down into the abyss to retrieve his broken body and restore it to his people, who buried him high on the mountain cliffs around Gondolin. Although his mound was rocky, it was said to have grown yellow flowers over it, possibly celandine. On occasions when a power of good was utterly outmatched by powers of evil, the Eldar coined the expression -- Glorfindel against the Balrog -- in memory of the flaming battle.
