Thorin was clever, prideful, courageous, vengeful and a little obstinate. Despite his nobility and sophistication, he tended to treat his allies equally. Many in Middle-earth respected him. He loved gold and at first shared the avarice of his family, but he also cared about the well-being of other people. He was incredibly courageous and prepared to sacrifice himself for a worthy cause, but then he had dragon-sickness. He appeared ruthless, obstinate, and conceited after giving in to Dragon-sickness, and he placed an excessive amount of importance on the treasure of Erebor. Since the Arkenstone was the heirloom of his family and a component of the Mountain itself, he was fixated on owning it. But in his final moments following the fight, he reverted to his true noble personality and begged pardon of Bilbo. Bilbo was deeply affected by his passing because he had regarded Thorin as a brother and a dear friend. In addition to the standard Dwarven axes, arrows, and swords, Thorin also used an Elven blade known as Orcrist, which Gandalf the Grey had given him. The weapon had been seized by the Wood-elves when Thranduil had imprisoned Thorin. Thranduil placed it on tomb of Thorin, along with the Arkenstone, after deciding it was more fitting for burial of Thorin.
