Following the unsuccessful effort to mount Caradhras (Redhorn), when they were being followed by Wargs, the Fellowship of the Ring had to make their way through Moria when they set out from Rivendell on the Quest of the Ring. The Watcher tried to murder Frodo Baggins as they went via the West-gate, next to a lake with murky waters. The Fellowship eventually arrived in the Chamber of Mazarbul, where they discovered a book detailing the last details of quest of Balin, after escaping the Watcher and making their way through numerous tunnels and enormous halls. They were then caught off guard as the Balrog emerged from the depths and stood in front of them while Orcs and Cave-trolls chased them through Moria to the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. Gandalf fearlessly faced the thing, and after a brief battle on the Bridge, the two fell into the chasm below together. The remainder of the Fellowship entered the Dimrill Dale after safely escaping Moria. The wizard followed the monster up the Endless Stair to the high peak of Celebdil, where a last fight took place, after both Gandalf and the Balrog survived their fall and landed in a swamp. After slaying the Balrog, Gandalf passed away from his injuries.
