After Aragorn and Gandalf parted ways in the spring of TA 3018, Aragorn set out on his own adventure and was unable to assist Gandalf when he learned that the Nazgûl were searching the Shire for Frodo and the Ring. Gildor Inglorion told Aragorn that Gandalf was missing and the Nine were searching for him after Frodo departed Hobbiton. Aragorn kept his eye on the Great East Road until the four hobbits and Tom Bombadil emerged from the Barrow-downs. Taking the name -- Strider, as the Men of Bree referred to him, he encountered Frodo at the Inn of the Prancing Pony after trailing them to Bree. The hobbits were first wary of him, but after Barliman Butterbur brought a message from Gandalf, they began to trust him. At the age of 87, Aragorn was then approaching the prime of life for a person of royal Númenórean descent. Aragorn led the Hobbits across the Midgewater Marshes and out of Bree-land following the raid on Bree. He witnessed, from a distance, the battle of Gandalf with the Nazgûl on Weathertop during that time. Upon reaching Weathertop, they found that five Nazgûl had trailed them, and he successfully repelled the Ringwraiths during the subsequent assault. He attempted to use Athelas to heal Frodo before guiding them across the Lone-lands and toward the Trollshaws. They encountered Glorfindel, the Elf-lord, who guided them to the Ford of Bruinen. After Elrond unleashed a torrent and the Nazgûl caught up with them, Aragorn and the Hobbits started a fire, driving out the Nazgûl who had stayed on the western side. After that, he went to Rivendell with Frodo.
