Legolas remained for coronation of Aragorn and marriage to Arwen following the demise of Sauron and the One Ring. Following their earlier vow to one another, he and Gimli went to Helms Deep, where they saw the Glittering Caves, and then passed through Fangorn Forest. Legolas had apparently been so moved by the Caves that he could not speak when he left them. With the leave of his father, Legolas eventually traveled to Ithilien with a few of his people to spend his remaining time in Middle-earth assisting in the restoration of the war-torn woodlands. Legolas built a ship in Ithilien and departed Middle-earth to travel across the sea after passing of Aragorn. Gimli was the sole Dwarf to travel to the Undying Lands after he accepted invitation of Legolas to journey with him, because of their close friendship. He was never seen again in Middle-earth.
