Before pulling a practical prank on his fellow hobbits by using the One Ring to vanish, Bilbo delivered a remarkable birthday speech. Gandalf promptly responded by using his staff to produce a blinding flash where Bilbo had been standing. Bilbo was never seen in the Shire again, and the hobbits of the party were left perplexed and unhappy. Gandalf convinced Bilbo to willingly give up the One Ring before he set out on his quest to Rivendell. With a note for Frodo, who would now become the next Ring-bearer, Bilbo placed it on the mantel of the fireplace. When Frodo got home from the party, he found that he had been given the magic Ring of Bilbo and was now the master of Bag End. Gandalf, who was still unsure if the Ring was the One Ring but was growing increasingly interested in its history, strength, and function, cautioned the young hobbit against using it. Frodo obeyed the request of the wizard and kept the Ring hidden in a secure location for the following seventeen years. But when Gandalf returned to Bag End on April 12, 3018, he informed Frodo that the Ring was actually the One Ring, which the Dark Lord Sauron required in order to govern Middle-earth. Gandalf suggested that the Hobbit surreptitiously track the travels of Bilbo to Rivendell since he knew Sauron would be searching for the Ring.
