Maedhros, also known as Maedhros the Tall, was the eldest of the seven sons of Fëanor and the prince of Ñoldor. After his father passed away in Middle-earth, he became the leader of the House of Fëanor. He was well known for his abilities as a diplomat and fighter. He commanded his House against the troops of Morgoth for centuries, but he was finally brought down by the Oath he and his six brothers had taken to retrieve the Silmarils. Sometime during the Noontide of Valinor, Maedhros was born to Fëanor and Nerdanel in Eldamar, most likely in Tirion. Following the departure of Fëanor from Tirion in Valinor, he and his father traveled to Formenos. Maedhros took the awful Oath of Fëanor to retrieve the sacred jewels after Morgoth killed Finwë and took the treasured Silmarils of Fëanor. Along with his father and brothers, Maedhros took part in the First Kinslaying. All the sons of Fëanor save for him, abstained from the burning of the Teleri ships, and he argued that ships and rowers should return to Aman in order to transport host of Fingolfin. The Dagor-nuin-Giliath was the target of an army of Orcs that assaulted the Ñoldor after they landed in Middle-earth. With the victory of the Elves, Fëanor and a small vanguard chased the remaining Orcish army back to Angband. However, when they neared Angband, the army of Fëanor came upon several Balrogs and was promptly annihilated. Gothmog, the Lord of the Balrogs, dealt Fëanor a deadly wound, but Maedhros and his brothers came with a relief force to save him. But Fëanor succumbed to his wounds
