Lúthien, who met Beren, a member of the House of Bëor, in the Doriath forests, was regarded in the Lay of Leithian as the first immortal woman to ever fall in love and marry a human man. From the start, their bond was improbable since Lúthien was not only the beloved only child of the most powerful Elven King of Beleriand, but also the offspring of Maia, a formidable angelic figure belonging to the Ainur tribe. A mortal man named Beren was evading the first Dark Lord Morgoth. With the intention of preventing Beren from marrying his daughter, Thingol set an impossible bride price: Beren had to bring one of the Silmarils from the iron crown of Morgoth to Thingol. The pair, assisted by Huan, the Hound of Valinor, accomplished the mission against terrible odds, which included being taken hostage by the Sons of Fëanor, death of Finrod Felagun, and a run-in with Sauron. However, Beren passed away as soon as the mission was finished. Soon after, Lúthien passed away from grief and went to the Halls of Mandos. There she sang to the Vala Mandos in her anguish. For the first and only time in his life, Mandos was moved to pity by the beauty of her music. Since Mandos lacked the power to grant Beren a second chance at life, he turned to Manwë for guidance, who then consulted Eru Ilúvatar himself. Lúthien was then given a choice: either she might be rewarded for all that she had done by living in Valmar with the Valar in eternal bliss, or she could be brought down to earth with Beren, provided that they would both be mortal and perish the death of men. Lúthien selected the latter because of her love for Beren.
