Éowyn was compelled to stay in Meduseld and take care of her ailing uncle for several of years before the War of the Ring because Saruman and Gríma Wormtongue had debilitated him. After Gandalf brought the King back to life, he was ready to protect Rohan from Isengard. Théoden urged his doorwarden, Háma, to recommend a leader for the people in his absence, as he intended to ride out to battle himself. Háma suggested Éowyn because she was – fearless – despite being a lady and all loved her. While Aragorn, Théoden, and the other men valiantly confronted army of Saruman in the Battle of the Hornburg, Éowyn grudgingly followed the orders of the King to lead the people of Edoras to safety in the White Mountains. She expressed her increasing emotions for Aragorn when he passed through Dunharrow to take the Paths of the Dead, but he reluctantly rejected her because he was already engaged. Éowyn when again implored Théoden to let her ride to battle against Mordor, she was refused. Resentfully, she however, rode to Minas Tirith on her horse Windfola, disguising herself as a man and adopting the alias Dernhelm. Meriadoc Brandybuck, who had been turned away by Théoden likewise, also desired to accompany his friends to combat, so she brought him along. Éowyn was lighter than a man of comparable height, so Windfola could carry both of them.
