The first major conflict of the War of the Ring was the Battle of the Hornburg, also known as the Battle of Helms Deep, in which the Rohirrim of King Théoden defended the Hornburg against the army of Dunlendings and Uruk-hai of Saruman. Due to losses at the Battles of the Fords of Isen, army of Saruman — which eventually included Uruk-hai, Wild Men of Dunland, Orcs, and Half-orcs — was bolstered en route to Hornburg. On March 3, the army would reach the castle at midnight. The first defense of Helms Dike was swiftly overrun by the Orcs, but they suffered heavy losses in the rear. Soon after, the Orcs approached Hornburg sufficiently to try to breach the gate with tree trunks, but a small attack party under the leadership of Aragorn II and Éomer dispersed them from a poster-door that ran between the wall of the Hornburg and the edge of cliff. The crew retreated from the new attack on the gate after using the ram to push the Orcs back. Éomer was knocked to the ground by two Orcs who had staged their deaths as they ran back. A hiding Gimli hewed the heads of the Orcs as Aragorn hurried back to save him, saving Éomer and earning Gimli his first two kills to that of twenty of Legolas. After that, the attackers erected hundreds of ladders to climb the Deeping Wall. The defenders hurled the ladders down, but Orcs who had slithered through the culvert at the base of the wall assaulted them from behind. The Orcs who managed to get through the hole were attacked by Gimli and Gamling the Old along with a group of warriors from the Westfold. After Legolas had twenty-four kills against twenty-one of Gimli, Gimli assisted in blocking the culvert with stones, causing the stream to overflow. Unfortunately, devilry of Saruman, the Fire of Orthanc, destroyed this obstacle as well as a significant chunk of the Deeping Wall.
