After regaining the wealth of his family, Thorin became furious at the presence of Thranduil and became so greedy that he refused to share any of the treasure. His relative, Dáin Ironfoot, despatched an army of Dwarven soldiers to secure the recovered mountain city after Thorin sent a Raven to ask for help. In the meantime, Thorin gave Bilbo a mithril shirt in appreciation of his valor and charged his friends with searching the treasure trove for the Arkenstone. Bilbo, on the other hand, had already located the Arkenstone and had secretly brought it to Bard and Thranduil to use as a negotiating chip. Upon discovering this, Thorin felt furious and branded his old friend as a traitor. The approaching goblin and warg armies abruptly stopped the escalating battle between Dwarves, Elves, and Men over the riches, which was expected to end in bloodshed. Instead, they banded together to confront their shared foes in what became known as the Battle of Five Armies. As the goblins threatened to overrun his allies, Thorin launched an attack from the mountain and delivered crucial assistance, demonstrating his leadership prowess during the conflict. Despite his valiant efforts, he was mortally wounded during the combat and needed Beorn to carry him to safety. Thorin made amends with Bilbo before his death by praising the courage of the Hobbit and moral qualities and expressing regret for his harsh remarks because he now understood the essentially noble intentions of his friend.
