Faramir:- Then farewell! But if I should return, think better of me! Denethor:- That depends on the manner of your return. In order to protect the northern entrances to Minas Tirith, Faramir and his group withdrew to Cair Andros, an island in the River Anduin. When Faramir saw that the sky was now completely dark, he and three of his men rode straight to Minas Tirith, while his company went south to reinforce the garrison at Osgiliath. The Nazgûl, riding Fellbeasts, chased them along the route. The Captain, who was a master of both men and beasts, went back to save the fallen as the other men, were unhorsed. They would have undoubtedly died if Gandalf had not stepped in. When Faramir reached Minas Tirith, he told Denethor and Gandalf about his meeting with Sam and Frodo. Denethor felt that Boromir would have brought the weapon of the Enemy to him, therefore he was upset that Faramir had not brought the Ring to Gondor and wished that his and roles of his brother had been switched. Denethor dispatched his surviving son to defend Western Osgiliath against the much superior numbers of the Enemy. Faramir decided to go even though he did not agree with the plan of his father. Following a day of combat, the army of the Witch-king defeated the Gondoran troops and took Osgiliath. Faramir withdrew to the Causeway Forts, whose defense continued for another day despite several defenders suffering injuries or losing their lives. In order to prevent the retreat over Pelennor Fields from becoming a rout, Faramir made the decision to remain with the rear guard. The Orcs overtook the force as it approached Minas Tirith, and a poisoned arrow severely injured Faramir and Haradrim. Luckily, the withdrawal was effectively covered by a cavalry sortie led by Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth, uncle of Faramir, and Gandalf. Faramir was brought back to Denethor by Imrahil, who informed him of the heroic actions of his son.
