Sam married Rose Cotton after the Scouring of the Shire. Elanor the Fair, Frodo, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin, and Tolman were among their thirteen children. Frodo Baggins gave Sam the Red Book of Westmarch and Bag End, where he and his vast personal family—later known as the Gardners—would reside for many years, when Frodo announced his departure to the Undying Lands, west of Middle-earth. Sam was chosen to serve seven consecutive seven-year terms as Mayor of the Shire in SR 1427 following resignation of Will Whitfoot as Mayor of Michel Delving. Sam departed the Shire and gave the Red Book to his daughter Elanor after his wife passed away in the year 61 of the Fourth Age (SR 1482). He was permitted to cross the Sea and be reunited with Frodo in the Undying Lands because he was also a Ring-bearer, and it was a custom passed down from Elanor that he visited the Grey Havens.
