The Misty Mountains, also known as Hithaeglir, were a group of mountains that stretched between Eriador and Rhovanion, 1280 kilometers from Mount Gundabad in the far north to Methedras in the south of Middle-earth. The Sindarin Ered Hithui was an early name for these mountains. Although Mount Gundabad, the northernmost peak of the Misty Mountains, later became an Orc stronghold and mountain fortress, legend has it that Durin awoke there. At the middle of the Misty Mountains lay Khazad-dûm, the largest Dwarven realm in Middle-earth. Since Oromë frequently rode across Middle-earth pursuing the fallen animals of Dark Lord, Melkor constructed the Misty Mountains during the Time of the Trees in an effort to make it harder for him to traverse. According to legend, the earliest occupants of Misty Mountains were anonymous beings that dwelt beneath the surface of the earth before Sauron ever set foot in Arda. They explored the first mountain tunnels, which would subsequently be inhabited and expanded upon by the Orcs and Dwarves, who unknowingly drove these unnamed creatures into more sinister nooks and crannies. Subsequently, some of the Teleri, subsequently called the Nandor, became terrified and turned south down the Great River when the Elves on their Great Journey to Valinor saw the terrifying height of the mountain. After awakening beneath Mount Gundabad, the Durin Dwarves would create the kingdom of Khazad-dûm. Once the Dwarves discovered a Balrog in TA 1980, the vast Dwarven dominion of Khazad-dûm was abandoned by TA 1981 and became known as Moria, meaning -- black chasm. As orcs and other creatures settled beneath the Misty Mountains and established settlements like Goblin-town, the mountains gradually grew more hazardous and dangerous for travelers. During the Quest of Erebor, over a millennium later, the thirteen Dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo Baggins crossed the Misty Mountains via the High Pass before being taken prisoner by Orcs. The Great Goblin was killed beneath the mountains, and Bilbo discovered the One Ring.
