According to Tolkien, the image of a man wearing a hat sitting in a woodland and conversing with a wild deer, in Der Berggeist by Josef Madlener served, as inspiration for Gandalf and made him consider the wizards Saruman, Radagast, and Gandalf. The name of the Radagast village, Rhosgobel, which means -- brown village -- in Sindarin, came from the location on the western eaves of Mirkwood. Gandalf described a past meeting with Radagast during the Council of Elrond in The Fellowship of the Ring. Gandalf was unintentionally lured to tower of Orthanc of Saruman by Radagast, whereupon he was taken prisoner. He was also fortunately saved by Radagast, who sent Gwaihir the eagle to Orthanc with information about army-movements of Sauron. Upon noticing that Gandalf was confined atop the tower, Gwaihir lifted him to safety. The only other mention of Radagast in The Lord of the Rings occurs when scouts are dispatched following the Council of Elrond. According to Tolkien scholar Patrick Curry, the Slavic Radagast, who is pictured with a bird on top of his horned helmet, is the pagan patron of the Czech Beskyd mountains. This implies, in his opinion, that Radagast of Tolkien is just one of many instances of Middle-earthian paganism.
