Isildur was brother of Anárion and eldest son of Elendil. While their father lived in Arnor in the north, he and Anárion built and shared control of Gondor in the south. Isildur cut the One Ring from grasp of Sauron during the War of the Last Alliance, but he refused to destroy it. The Ring was lost for about 2,500 years after Orcs killed Isildur in the Disaster of the Gladden Fields. Sauron endured and continued to pose a threat to Middle-earth because Isildur refused to destroy the Ring. In the War of the Ring, heir of Isildur would aid in overthrowing Sauron, and his lineage persisted in the Dúnedain of the North. In the Second Age year SA 3209, Isildur was born in Númenor. His younger brother Anárion was born in SA 3219. On the east coast of the island of Númenor, they resided in the sanctuary of Rómenna. Amandil, the Lord of Andúnië, was their grandfather, and Elendil was their father. Through Silmariën, the eldest child and daughter of Tar-Elendil, the fourth King of Númenor, the Lords of Andúnië were descended from the Kings of Númenor. Anárion settled in Minas Anor, west of the Anduin, whereas Isildur resided in Minas Ithil, east of the Anduin. Constructed on both banks of the river, Osgiliath served as their joint capital. Isildur planted the White Tree of Gondor in front of his house when he constructed Minas Ithil in a valley of the Mountains of Shadow on the edge of Mordor. In addition to being a stunning city, Minas Ithil served as a stronghold to protect Mordor from whatever evil that might still exist there. The fact that Sauron had survived the Downfall and had started to regain his might was initially unknown.
