The Rohirrim were a people of Northmen origin who lived in the middle Middle-earth realm of Rohan. Their renowned horsemanship was referenced in the names Rohirrim and Rohan. The Rohirrim were a tall, blond, largely blue-eyed people; the women were especially lovely, and the men were big, husky, and gorgeous. They stuck to their own culture and dialect and were bold, honourable, autonomous, and self-possessed. Their entire civilization revolved around the breeding and trading of horses, which were valuable assets in their daily life. They had few cities and generally lived in villages on the plains of Rohan where their horses grazed. Originating from the Northmen of Rhovanion and the Éothéod, who inhabited the vales of the Great River Anduin, the Rohirrim were relocated to Calenardhon, a plain-land given to them forever by Cirion, the Ruling Steward of Gondor, as payment for their aid to Gondor during a dire straitening. They were therefore obligated by the Oath of Eorl to be lifelong allies of Gondor. Horsemen of Rohan are frequently referred to as Riders of the Mark or Riders of Rohan. The Rohirrim bear a resemblance to the Anglo-Saxons of antiquity, a Germanic people group that included the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes and who invaded and conquered Britain in the fifth century.
