During the First Age, Elu Thingol— originally Elwë —was an Elf of the Teleri. They may have had another brother named Elmo, who was close to Finwë, the first King of the Ñoldor in the days before the Elves arrived in Aman. His brother Olwë went on to become the Lord of Alqualondë, Lord of Tol Eressëa, and King of the Teleri of Aman. Respected by all the Sindar of Beleriand, who saw him as the Lord of Beleriand and thus supreme ruler of all the Elves who inhabited in the realms between the Blue Mountains and Great Sea, he was the founder and first King of the central Kingdom of Doriath. Father of Elwë was a direct descendant of Enel and Enelyë, and he was born in Cuiviénen during the Years of the Trees to parents who remain anonymous. When he traveled from Cuiviénen with Oromë as the Teleri emissary to view the kingdom of Valinor, he first appears in the history of the Eldar. He persuaded a large number of his people to accompany him back to that nation after his return. The Teleri trailed after the Elves on their Great Journey to the West, reaching the coast only after the island of Tol Eressëa moved on. Consequently, they remained in Beleriand for an extended period until Tol Eressëa was returned to transport them, at which point numerous Teleri developed a fondness for Beleriand and made the decision to remain there. Among them was Elwë, who had fallen profoundly in love with Melian the Maia when they met in woods of Nan Elmoth. Many of his people stayed behind in Middle-earth to look for him after he vanished for a long time.
