Bofur lived in the late Third Age and was a dwarf. His most famous role was accompanying Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, and Gandalf, along with his brother Bombur and cousin Bifur, on their mission to retake the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. Bofur was descended from the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm and was not related to the royal House of Durin. Bofur, along with his brother Bombur and cousin Bifur, attended the gathering at Bag End while responding to the quest of Thorin Oakenshield to Erebor. To recover the Dwarven-treasure from the dragon Smaug, he traveled across Wilderland to the Lonely Mountain with Thorin, Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, and the rest of the Company of Thorin. Bofur took part in and survived the Battle of Five Armies after the death of the dragon, and he was given his agreed-upon fourteenth share of the loot. His post-Battle of Five Armies life is not well described. Bofur was alive and well in Erebor, Glóin informed Frodo Baggins shortly before the Council of Elrond. Although his death date is unknown, he may have lived into the early Fourth Age.
