As a member of Thorin and Company, Dwalin accompanied Bilbo and Gandalf on their journey to retrieve the Lonely Mountain from the hands of the Dragon Smaug. He was the youngest son of Fundin and sibling of Balin. Born in TA 2772, two years after Smaug the dragon had destroyed Erebor, Dwalin was younger brother of Balin and the son of Fundin. Dwalin, being twenty-seven, fought in the Battle of Azanulbizar and moved to the northern Ered Luin to live in peace with Thráin II and Thorin Oakenshield. Dwalin, his brother Balin and a few others, went with Thráin when he set out from the Ered Luin later in TA 2841 on a Quest to retake Erebor. The Sauron envoys bore down on the little group. Thráin was taken prisoner in TA 2845 one night while he and his friends sought cover from a dark rain beneath the eaves of Mirkwood. The Dwarves gave up trying to find their king and went back to tell Thorin what had happened.
