Located south of Lincoln, England, and around one mile west of the settlement of Boothby Graffoe, Somerton Castle is part of Lincolnshire. The location lies between the Lincoln Edge and the Witham River on low-lying land. Somerton Castle is located in the Manor of Waddington, which is sometimes referred to as the Manor of Somerton Castle, even though it is in the parish of Boothby Graffoe. The castle was most likely constructed by Antony Bek around 1281 and presented to King Edward II in 1309. Following the Battle of Poitiers, King John II of France was captured and held captive at Somerton Castle from 1359 to 1360. The castle remained crown property until Charles I sold it in 1628, at which point it has remained privately owned. After receiving a license to crenellate in 1281, Antony Bek constructed the castle that he inherited from his mother, Eva de Gray. King Edward II received the castle as a gift from Bek in 1309. When King Edward II took power, the castle was discovered to be in poor shape; the chapel, located on the west side of the castle, was in poor repair, and lead had been stolen from the towers and great hall. Following coronation of Edward III in 1330, military engineer John Crabbe was named Constable of the Castle, and in the fall of 1334, King Edward visited the castle, presumably to approve repairs. By 1393, it was claimed that the castle needed £100 to restore its walls, gates, towers, bridges, ditches, lead roofing, tiling, boarding, glass, and ironwork. The castle was controlled from the King by the Dukes of Clarence from 1415 until 1478, when George, Duke of Clarence was executed. The Hussey family subsequently inherited the property after the Corporation of the City of London purchased it from Charles I in 1628. Somerton Castle was included on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk register in 2010 because of the decaying structure of the castle buildings. #History #Architecture #Castles
