Located east of the village of Hornby in the Lune Valley, Lancashire, England, Hornby Castle is a country house that was built from a medieval castle. It is situated in a bend of the River Wenning, with a view of the village. The house is registered as a Grade I listed building in National Heritage List of England. The base of the tower in the castle-rear was most likely constructed in the 13th century, when the castle was first constructed for the Neville family. The 16th-century polygonal tower that rises from its base was most likely constructed for Sir Edward Stanley, 1st Baron Monteagle. In 1536, the second Baron Monteagle, his son, helped put an end to the Rising of the North. After selling off a large portion of the property, the third Baron Monteagle died in 1581, leaving behind an only daughter, Elizabeth, who wed Edward Parker, the 12th Baron Morley. William, their son, became the fourth Baron Monteagle and gained notoriety as the peer who had been alerted to the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. His estates were subsequently declared forfeit and auctioned because his son Henry was an ardent Royalist at the beginning of the Civil War. Despite the fact that the family eventually reclaimed the castle, Thomas, son of Henry, was compelled to sell it due to dire financial troubles. The house features slate roofs and was built of sandstone rubble. It has a perpendicular architectural style. The plan is not consistent. Much of the structure has a battlemented parapet, and it is primarily two stories tall. The entrance front has seven bays and faces southwest. It is nearly symmetrical. Both the center three-story porch and the lateral bays protrude forward. All the windows are mullioned, or mullioned and transomed. The upper floors of the bay windows in the lateral bays are canted. There are two more windows above the bay window in the left bay. There are two bays with different kinds of windows on either side of the porch. #History #Architecture #Castles
