In Devon, England, Kingswear Castle is an artillery fort that was constructed to guard Dartmouth Harbor. One of the first purpose-made artillery forts in Britain, it was built between 1491 and 1502 in reaction to the prospect of French attack. However, the usefulness of castle had diminished by the end of the 16th century due to advancements in the range of artillery weapons. It participated in the English Civil War and remained armed until the early eighteenth century until collapsing. Restored as a summer home in 1855, the Landmark Trust now oversees it as a holiday rental. Kingswear Castle was constructed to defend the seaside town of Dartmouth in Devon. The town-harbor, which could accommodate up to 600 ships, was a significant fishing and commercial port throughout the Middle Ages. It is situated on the estuary of the River Dart. The town converted Dartmouth Castle, located on the west bank of the estuary, into an artillery fort between 1486 and 1495 out of fear of a French invasion and the need to keep an important royal subsidy. In order to guard the east side of the estuary, construction on Kingswear started in 1491. When it was finished in 1502, it was one of the first purpose-built cannon forts in Britain. It was a square, three-story tower made of slate rubble with red sandstone accents. Similar to Dartmouth Castle, it had massive, rectangular gun-ports on the ground floor with wooden shutters that overlooked the anchorage and the sea from near the water-edge at the harbor-entrance. In addition to housing the garrison, the first level would have housed firearms. A survey conducted in the 1570s suggested that the castle should maintain four brass artillery weapons. By the end of the 16th century, however, the military value of the castle had diminished and it was not typically manned. This was because the range of artillery weapons rapidly expanded, eliminating the need for armed forts on both banks of the river. #History #Architecture #Castles
