Four miles northwest of Bourne on the A151 lies the country house known as Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire, England. It is part of a 3,000-acre park that Capability Brown landscaped with lakes, forest, and rolling pastures. The towers and outlying pavilions of Grimsthorpe evoke the bastions of a large stronghold in classical garb, despite the fact that it is not a castle in the traditional meaning of the word. The de Eresby family has lived in Grimsthorpe since 1516. On the crest of a ridge on the way inland from the Lincolnshire fen border towards the Great North way, the structure was formerly a tiny castle. Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln, is credited with starting it in the early 13th century. But he was the first and last to create the Earldom of Lincoln, and he passed away in 1156. The Anarchy, when castle construction in England peaked, was heyday of Gilbert. The castle may also have been constructed as early in the year 1140. But it is generally accepted that the tower in the southeast corner of the current structure was a part of the ancient castle. The title Earl of Lincoln returned to the crown, although Grimsthorpe probably fell into the hands of Gilbert de Gant, who spent much of his life in the throne of Earl of Chester. Ranulph de Blondeville, 4th Earl of Chester, was made a member of the earldom, following creation in 1217. The tower-name may have come from the fact that King John appears to have owned the title, if not the property, during his rule. It was owned by Lord Lovell in the latter years of the Plantagenet dynasty in England. He was a well-known Richard III supporter. Following the accession of Henry VII to the throne, Lovell backed an uprising to reinstate the former royal dynasty. Property of Lovell was seized and given to a Tudor Dynasty supporter after the uprising collapsed. #History #Architecture #Castles
