Situated in Wensleydale, Yorkshire, England, Bolton Castle dates back to the 14th century. A nearby village of Castle Bolton is also named for the castle. The castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed structure. Richard, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton, constructed the castle, which is an example of a quadrangular castle, between 1378 and 1399. A contract with mason John Lewyn was signed in September 1378, and a license to construct it was issued in July 1379. The estimated cost of construction was 18,000 Marks. In 1536, John the 8th Baron Scrope granted asylum in the castle to Adam Sedbar, Abbot of Jervaulx, and backed the Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion against the religious reforms of King Henry VIII. As a result, Abbot Sedbar was apprehended and put to death, while John Scrope was forced to escape to Skipton while being chased by the men of the King. The king ordered Bolton Castle to be set on fire as payback, which resulted in significant damage. A few years later, Sir John had reclaimed his place in Parliament and some of the damage had been rectified. For six months, Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned at Bolton. According to legend, she managed to escape and headed for Leyburn, but she lost her shawl en route. This is why the cliff edge that extends west from Leyburn is known as -- The Shawl --, a popular location for leisurely strolls with breathtaking vistas. Following death of Emanuel Scrope, 1st Earl of Sunderland in 1630 without any surviving children, Mary, the oldest of his three illegitimate daughters, acquired Bolton Castle. She wed Charles Powlett, the first Duke of Bolton and sixth Marquess of Winchester. Their descendant, Thomas Peter Algar Orde-Powlett, 9th Baron Bolton, inherited the castle after his father passed away in June 2023. The land also has a vineyard, a maze, a herb garden, a wild flower meadow, and a rose garden. During certain months, falconry displays are put out for tourists. In addition to being a popular tourist destination, the castle is occasionally rented out for occasions like weddings. #History #Architecture #Castles
