Lumley Castle is possessed by The Earl of Scarbrough, a quadrangular castle from the 14th century located in Chester-le-Street, North of England, close to the city of Durham. The building is listed as Grade I. Today, it is used as a hotel. It bears the name of its original creator, Sir Ralph Lumley, who, upon returning from conflicts in Scotland in 1389, transformed his family-manor-house into a castle. But he lost his possessions to the Earl of Somerset and was imprisoned and later executed after being linked to a plan to depose Henry IV. Thomas, the grandson of Sir Ralph Lumley, regained ownership of the castle in 1421. John Lumley, 1st Baron Lumley, made changes to the castle-windows to increase natural light, added a new fireplace to the great hall, and constructed a black-and-white marble lavabo with a pelican, the crest of Lumley coat of arms, on it. In 1603, when James VI and I became King of England, he traveled from Edinburgh to London to assume his new position. As a guest of Lord Lumley, he made a brief halt at the castle on April 13 while traveling from Newcastle upon Tyne to Durham. This relationship with the king is honored in the King James Suite hotel room. Sir John Vanbrugh is credited with making the Georgian changes to the castle, especially the library, which is now the Black Knight Restaurant, even though there are no records to support this claim. Following the donation of the residence of Durham Castle by Bishop Van Mildert to the newly established University of Durham, the Lumley castle was occupied by the Bishop of Durham by the eighteenth century. As a result, University College of Durham moved into the castle as a residence hall. University College students, known as -- castlemen --, attended Lumley Castle for their first year and Durham Castle for their subsequent years. #History #Architecture #Castles
