Hever Castle is situated 30 miles southeast of London, England, in the village of Hever, Kent, close to Edenbridge. Built in the 13th century, it started out as a farm home. The Boleyns lived there from 1462 to 1539. After her father, Thomas Boleyn, inherited it in 1505, Anne Boleyn, the second queen consort of King Henry VIII of England, spent her early youth there. After his father, Sir William Boleyn, he inherited the castle. Later, Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of King Henry VIII, inherited it. The Broadland Properties of Guthrie family currently owns the Grade I listed castle. This ancient castle was built over the course of three major periods. The gatehouse and a walled bailey comprised the oldest portion of the castle, which was built in 1270. James Fiennes, 1st Baron Saye, and Sele were its owners at the time. The second period began in 1462 when Geoffrey Boleyn, the younger brother of Thomas Boleyn, Master of Gonville Hall, Cambridge, transformed the castle—which at the time needed repair—into a manor. He enclosed the walls with a Tudor dwelling. When William Waldorf Astor purchased it in the 20th century, it underwent a third phase of restoration and repair. In 1505, Thomas Boleyn, the grandson of Geoffrey Boleyn, inherited the castle. Along with his spouse, Lady Elizabeth Howard, and their three children, George, Mary, and Anne, he resided there. Although Anne may not have been born in Hever, she resided there until 1513, when she was transferred to the Netherlands to study at the court of Archduchess Margaret. After father of Anne, Thomas Boleyn, passed away in 1539, Henry VIII inherited the land. In 1540, he gave it to Anne of Cleves as part of the settlement after their marriage was dissolved. One of the personal locks of Henry VIII, which he carried with him on his numerous visits to the homes of aristocrats and installed on each door for his protection, is still present in Hever Castle. The Waldegrave family owned the land from 1557 to 1715, followed by the Humfreys family from 1749 to 1749, then the Meade-Waldo family from 1749 to 1903. The castle was leased to a number of private tenants during this later ownership period and was in bad state of repair.      #History #Architecture #Castles
