Guildford Castle is in Guildford, Surrey, England. It is considered to have been erected by William the Conqueror, or one of his barons, shortly after the 1066 invasion of England. After the Battle of Hastings in 1066 William marched his army to Canterbury and then devastated towns including Guildford. Later William, or one of his barons, erected Guildford Castle. Since the Domesday Book of 1086 contains no mention of it, construction most likely began after that time. The motte, which was a ditch and a bailey surrounded by a wooden palisade, would have been the first structure constructed at the castle. The bailey-perimeter would have paralleled Quarry Street, Castle Street, South Hill, and what is now Racks Close. The outer and inner baileys would have been separated by a palisade if it had been designed in the manner of the Normans. The motte, on which a wooden keep would have been erected as a lookout point for the soldiers positioned there, would have been included in the inner bailey. A shell keep was created by erecting a wall of Bargate stone around the top of the motte in the late 11th or early 12th century. A keep or tower was subsequently added in the 1130s, using Bargate stone from neighboring Godalming that had been bonded with strong, enduring mortar. The keep-foundations may have reached the chalk bedrock, and it may have been constructed over a portion of the shell keep. To help with defense, the entrance was on the first floor of the keep, which had a ground floor and a first floor. The King most likely utilized the keep as a private residence. There were no windows on the ground floor. Soon after, a second floor with a two-seater latrine was erected. Lead was used for the building-roof, and plaster and whitewash were applied to the interior walls. The King relocated to nicer quarters in the Bailey in the 12th century. #History #Architecture #Castles
