The village of Etal in Northumberland, England, is home to the abandoned medieval fortification known as Etal Castle. It was constructed by Robert Manners sometime around 1341 and included a corner tower, a gatehouse, and a residential tower that was enclosed by a curtain wall. The castle had a role in both the English-Scottish border warfare and local strife. The competing Manners and Heron families engaged in combat outside the walls in 1428, and during Scotland invasion King James IV of England in 1513, it was briefly taken. After being acquired by the Crown in 1547 and garrisoned as part of the border defenses, the castle deteriorated and was no longer used as a military garrison after 1603. It grew ruined and stopped being utilized as a domestic residence in the 18th century. The Joicey family still owns the castle in the twenty-first century, although English Heritage is in charge of its management. It is a Grade I listed building that is accessible to the public and protected by UK law as an ancient monument. At first, Etal Castle was shielded by the steep slopes that ran to the river and overlooking a bridge over the Till. The castle is enclosed in a rectangular shape and is shielded by a well-constructed, albeit thin, stone curtain wall. Since then, the majority of the above-ground wall has been demolished, leaving just the foundations. Unusual for this area, a forebuilding entered the residential tower on the northeast corner. #History #Architecture #Castles
