In Oakham, Rutland, there is a historical structure called Oakham Castle. The castle is regarded as one of the finest examples of domestic Norman architecture of England and is well-known for its massive collection of horseshoes. The building is listed as Grade I. The Rutland County Council owns and operates Oakham Castle, which has a civil ceremony license. The castle is free to enter. Walkelin de Ferrers, lord of Oakham and a great-nephew of Robert de Ferrers, 1st Earl of Derby, constructed the castle between 1180 and 1190. The nave and two arcaded aisles, each supported by three large stone columns, make up the Great Hall. The sculptures are said to have been created by masons who had also worked at Canterbury Cathedral and are carved from local stone quarried at Clipsham. Since 1229, a Crown Court has been held in Oakham Castle every two years, making it one of oldest seats of justice of England. The current entrance to the marketplace is believed to have been built in the early 17th century by George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, and it closely resembles the gateways at Burley-on-the-Hill. It served as the meeting location for the Rutland County Council after the Local Government Act of 1888, which established county councils in all counties, went into effect. It stayed that way until 1936, when the county council relocated to Catmose House. Oakham Castle does not fit the conventional definition of a castle because of its diminutive size. But the Great Hall of a much larger fortified manor house was once what is now known as Oakham Castle. This included a gatehouse, a drawbridge with iron chains, and a curtain wall, among other classic castle elements. Additionally, historical and archeological evidence testifies to the presence of a moat and turrets at key locations along the walls of Oakham Castle. #History #Architecture #Castles
