The town of the same name in County Durham, England, is home to the ruined medieval castle known as Barnard castle. Guy de Balliol constructed a stone castle on the location of a previously fortified fortification between approximately 1095 and 1125. The structure was expanded between 1125 and 1185 by his nephew Bernard de Balliol and his son Bernard II. King Alexander II of Scotland besieged the castle in 1216. Despite the Bishops of Durham contesting its possession, the Balliol family continued to hold it. The castle was given to the Bishop of Durham in 1296 after John Balliol was overthrown as King of Scotland. Edward I gave it to the Earl of Warwick around 1300. When Anne Beauchamp, 16th Countess of Warwick, married Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, the castle passed in the 15th century. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, inherited the castle from his wife, Anne Neville, during the Wars of the Roses in 1477. It turned into one of his favorite homes. Sir George Bowes of Streatlam garrisoned the castle, which was then owned by the crown, during the rebellion of the Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland during reign of Elizabeth. Cromwell besieged the castle during the Civil War, and the garrison submitted to him following a heavy cannonading. Sir Henry Vane, an ancestor of the Duke of Cleveland and a Viscount Bernard himself, acquired the castle, lands, and appurtenances following a series of grants and reversions. A member of Parliament and a significant figure in the household of Charles I, Sir Henry Vane the Elder first served as his governor and then as his treasurer. He paid £18,000 for Raby Castle, Barnard Castle, and the Estate. In order to preserve and renovate Raby, he decided to make it his primary residence and de-roofed and removed stone from Barnard Castle. The castle is accessible to the general public and is under the care of English Heritage. The remains of the Great Hall and Great Chamber from the 14th century, as well as the cylindrical tower from the 12th century, are especially noteworthy. #History #Architecture #Castles
