Located in Tonbridge, Kent, England, Tonbridge Castle dates back to the 13th century. Richard Fitz Gilbert was given land in Kent to protect the Medway River crossing after the Norman Conquest. On the spot, he built a basic Motte-and-bailey castle. Fifty thousand tonnes of earth were hauled in order to dig the moat and build the motte. Successors of Fitz Gilbert, the de Clare dynasty, rebelled against King William II in 1088. The castle was besieged by his soldiers. The king ordered the castle and the town of Tonbridge to be burned to the ground as retribution after the castle collapsed after two days of holding. The de Clares had built a stone shell keep in lieu of the timber castle before to 1100. This was strengthened in the thirteenth century, and the town was surrounded by a stone wall in 1295. Either his son Gilbert or Richard de Clare, third Earl of Hertford, constructed the twin-towered gatehouse. The gatehouse was finished in 1260 after 30 years of construction. The gatehouse is quite similar to the ones Gilbert built at Caerphilly Castle between 1268 and 1271. During one of the trips of Edward I to France, the great seal of England was temporarily housed here. With the exception of a brief time during the civil war, the castle was uninhabited from 1521 until the late 1700s. In 1793, the mansion was added. The mansion and the castle are both Grade I listed buildings. In 1900, the local council bought the site, converted the grounds into a public park, and today uses the mansion as offices. The Tudor Trail, a 6-mile cycling route to Penshurst Place, begins at the castle. #History#Architecture#Castles
