The village of Brougham, in Cumbria, England, just outside of Penrith, is home to the historic house museum known as Brougham Hall. A Wilfred de Burgham was listed during reign of Henry II, suggesting that the de Burgham family may have owned land at Brougham during the reign of Edward the Confessor and was permitted to maintain their position following the Norman Conquest of England, which took place in this area after 1092. By serving the Vieuxpont lords at nearby Brougham Castle, the de Burghams were able to keep their territory. During the Middle Ages, the hall, which was typically sold in third portions, was owned by several households. In 1654, Lady Anne Clifford, 14th Baroness de Clifford, who owned Brougham Castle at the time, purchased a third of Brougham Hall. Following her death, steward and attorney-at-law of Lady Anne, James Bird, became the first individual to own the full edifice since the de Broughams when he purchased her third of the Hall and land. However, the male line of Birds of Brougham family died out, and in 1726, Thomas Carleton, who owned the Hall and estate at the time, sold it to John Brougham of Scales. The thirteenth-century doorway is the oldest section of the hall, while the Tudor Hall, which was built between 1480 and 1520, is the next oldest. James Bird constructed the guardhouse in the seventeenth century. The Hall was expanded and extended between 1830 and 1847 as a result of Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham, and ascent of Vaux to power. Following World War II, the Hall remained abandoned until Christopher Terry bought it in 1967. Volunteers are now renovating the hall, which is accessible to the public all year round. #History#Architecture#Castles
