In the English county of Kent, between Ashford and Canterbury, sits the village of Chilham, where Chilham Castle is a Jacobean manor house and keep. Although it may have been constructed on an earlier Anglo-Saxon stronghold, the keep is Norman in origin and dates to 1174. In 1616, the manor house for Sir Dudley Digges was finished. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Manor House and the surrounding gardens underwent a number of modifications and enhancements. The oldest structure in the village, the polygonal keep of the Norman Castle, is one of the oldest dwellings in Great Britain, having been constructed in 1174 and still occupied today. Although archaeological studies conducted in the 1920s indicate that it is situated on the foundations of a much older Anglo-Saxon stronghold, potentially dating from the seventh century, it was supposedly constructed for King Henry II. Bartholomew de Badlesmere threw a reception for Edward II and his entourage in June 1320 at Chilham Castle as they were passing through Dover on their way to France. The Jacobean structure, which is visible from the keep, was finished for Sir Dudley Digges in 1616. It had a hexagonal layout, with five angled ranges and one left open. It features corner towers with squared ogee cappings, battlemented parapets, and clustered facetted columnar brick chimneys. James Wildman bought Chilham Castle in 1794, and his son James Beckford Wildman inherited it in 1816. However, after the slaves on the West Indies estates of the slaves were freed, his income declined, and he sold the castle in 1861. The Victoria and Albert Museum has plans of Chilham that depict some of the major alterations made to the structure by Herbert Baker for mining tycoon Sir Edmund and Lady Davis in the early 1920s and David Brandon for Charles Hardy in 1862. The current terracing descends to a fishing lake and was modified in the 18th and 19th centuries. #History #Architecture #Castles
