About six miles north of Rochester, near the village of Cooling, Kent, on the Hoo Peninsula, stands Cooling Castle, a quadrangular castle from the fourteenth century. The Cobham family, the local lords of the manor, constructed it in the 1380s to protect the region from French incursions into the Thames Estuary. The distinctive design of the castle consists with two adjacent walled wards of varying sizes, encircled by ditches and moats. It was the first castle in England built for the use of gunpowder by its defenders. The use of gunpowder weapons against the castle however proved disastrous in spite of this distinction. When Sir Thomas Wyatt besieged it in January 1554 during his failed revolt against Queen Mary, it was taken within eight hours. The castle was severely damaged in his raid, and as a result, it was left to deteriorate. One hundred years later, a farmhouse and outbuildings were built among the ruins. Jools Holland, a musician, now resides in the farmhouse, while the barn nearby is used for weddings. Originally constructed on the south bank of the Thames, the castle-shoreline has since receded due to land reclamation; today, the river is located roughly two miles north of the castle, with marshes separating it from the structure. The master mason of the King, Henry Yevele, served as an overseer while local laborers, including Thomas Crompe, William Sharnall, and Thomas Wrek, constructed the imposing gatehouse, according to surviving records. #History #Architecture #Castles
