During the Middle Ages, the primary residence of the Bishop of Winchester was Wolvesey Castle in Winchester, Hampshire, England. With the exception of its chapel from the fifteenth century, which is now a part of Wolvesey Palace, the current home bishop, the castle, which was mostly constructed in the 12th century by Henry of Blois, is now a ruin. Wolvesey Castle was essentially a palace, but because of The Anarchy, Blois had it fortified. The location is Wulveseye, an eyot in the River Itchen. Buildings from the Roman era were located there. Æthelwold of Winchester, the Bishop of Winchester from 963 to 984, built the structure that is now Wolvesey Castle in 970 as his formal residence or palace. William Giffard, the second Norman bishop, built a new hall to the southwest in 1110. Between 1135 and 1138, brother of King Stephen, Henry of Blois, successor of Giffard, erected a second hall to the west. During the civil conflict known as The Anarchy, Winchester was besieged by the Empress Matilda during the Rout of Winchester in 1141. It remained under siege for three weeks until wife of Stephen, Matilda, rescued it. In order to give the palace the appearance of a castle, Henry, the brother of Stephen, King of England, later expanded and strengthened it by erecting a curtain wall. English Heritage today owns and cares for the vast remaining ruins. Since March 24, 1950, the ruins have been designated as Grade I listed status. A considerable portion of the curtain wall is still there, but almost all of the interior furnishings have been removed. However, the hall can still be seen, with one Norman window still standing and a good round arch. The city walls, some of which are still standing, are close to the castle. #History #Architecture #Castles
