Located in Põltsamaa, Jõgeva County, in eastern Estonia, Põltsamaa Castle is also known as Põltsamaa Order Castle. The Livonian Order established the castle as a strictly defensive crusader stronghold in 1272. The castle was briefly seized by Polish forces during the Livonian War. From 1570 until 1578, it was the official residence of Duke Magnus of Holstein, who sought to establish a Livonian state with the assistance of Tsar Ivan the Terrible of Russia. Field Marshal Herman Wrangel received the estate as a gift from Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus in 1623. Wrangel began converting the medieval stronghold into a stately late-renaissance residence. However, the interior of the castle was ruined and it was burned down during the Great Northern War. Heinrich von Fick, a reformer, received the castle as a gift from Emperor Peter the Great after the war. In 1750, it finally came into the possession of Woldemar Johann von Lauw by inheritance. He started a massive reconstruction project that turned the fortress into an opulent rococo residence. It finally passed into the hands of the Gagarin family, a Russian aristocratic family, after his reign, and it stayed in there hands until the 1919 Estonian land reform. Built on the banks of the Põltsamaa River, the medieval castle is encircled by a moat. It was a square fortress with an interior courtyard and three gates. The 14th and 15th centuries saw a number of additions, such as the construction of a convent hall and the progressive raising of the walls. At three of the wall-corners were small, rectangular towers. The inner convent building featured a watchtower in the southwest corner and its own inner courtyard. A cannon tower and a bastion were erected in front of the southern gate during the 16th century. Additionally, a cannon tower was erected to guard the northern gate. During the Second World War, in 1941, an air raid completely destroyed the castle. #History #Architecture #Castles
