The village of Brough in Cumbria, England, is home to the ruined castle known as Brough Castle. In order to guard a vital route through the Pennine Mountains, William Rufus constructed the castle in the former Roman fort of Verterae circa 1092. During the Great Revolt against Henry II in 1174, the Scots assaulted and demolished the original motte and bailey stronghold. Following the conflict, the castle was rebuilt with a square keep and the remaining castle was converted to stone. The Clifford family acquired Brough in the 1260s following the Second Barons War; they constructed Cliffords Tower and renovated the castle, constructing a fortification in the traditional northern English design. Around 1450, Thomas Clifford may have added a second courtyard inside the bailey and strengthened the gatehouse with buttresses. The Cliffords sided with the Lancastrians during the Wars of the Roses, which pitted the Lancastrians against the Yorkists. Thomas passed away in 1455, and his son John followed in 1461. The Yorkists briefly took Brough away from the Cliffords until Henry VII returned his possessions to Henry, son of John, in 1485. However, in 1521, Henry Clifford hosted a Christmas feast in the castle, which led to large fire subsequently and destroyed the castle. Until Lady Anne Clifford rebuilt it between 1659 and 1661 and used it as one of her northern country residences, the castle was abandoned. Another fire occurred in 1666, making the castle unusable once more. As Brough Castle began to deteriorate, its stonework was removed first, followed by its fixtures. Around 1800, the brickwork of the castle started to crumble. Brough Castle was turned over to the state in 1921 and is currently operated as a tourist destination by English Heritage. It is a scheduled monument and a listed building. #History #Architecture #Castles
