On the Isle of Purbeck peninsula in the English county of Dorset, Corfe Castle is a castle that towers over the village of the same name. Constructed in the eleventh century by William the Conqueror, the castle overlooks a gulf in the Purbeck Hills on the path connecting Wareham and Swanage. While most castles in England were constructed using earth and timber, the first phase was one of the first to be constructed at least partially of stone. The 12th and 13th centuries saw significant structural alterations to Corfe Castle. When Elizabeth I sold Corfe Castle to Sir Christopher Hatton in 1572, it then discontinued under Crown ownership. The castle was owned by Sir John Bankes during the English Civil War after he purchased it in 1635. When Parliamentarian forces twice besieged the castle, wife of Bankes, Lady Mary Bankes, oversaw the defense while he was fighting at Oxford and London. Although the initial siege in 1643 failed, Corfe, one of the last royalist strongholds in southern England, was taken over by an attack in 1645 following a siege. On the authority of Parliament, Corfe Castle was slighted in March of that year. Due to two streams eroding the rock on either side, Corfe Castle was constructed on a steep slope in a break in a long stretch of chalk hills. Little is known about past activities on the hill because of the medieval castle-construction. Postholes from a Saxon hall may be found on the site, and we know from contemporary text that Anglo-Saxon nobles, including Queen Ælfthryth, wife of Edgar, used it as a dwelling. Shortly after the Norman invasion of England in 1066, a castle was established at Corfe on the south coast of England. William the Conqueror constructed the Purbeck royal forest there, where he liked to hunt. One of the quintessential pictures of a medieval castle is Corfe Castle, perched atop a hill. But contrary to popular belief, a medieval castle was not usually found on the highest point in the terrain. A small percentage in England is situated on hilltops, while the majority located in valleys, many of which are close to crucial transportation routes like river crossings. The castle is accessible to the general public and is owned by the National Trust. It is safeguarded as a Scheduled Monument and a Grade I listed building. #History #Architecture #Castles
