Rochester Castle is located in Rochester, Kent, South East England, on the east bank of the River Medway. The most notable feature of the castle, the stone tower or keep from the 12th century, is among the best preserved examples of its era in either France or England. Rochester was a strategically significant royal castle located on Watling Street and the River Medway. It contributed to the defense of southeast coast of England against invasion in the late medieval era. Following the Norman Conquest, first castle of Rochester was established. Bishop Odo received it, most likely from William the Conqueror, his half-brother. Odo backed Robert Curthose, the eldest son of the Conqueror, against William Rufus during the Rebellion of 1088 over the inheritance of English throne. The castle saw its first military action during this struggle; Odo turned Rochester into a rebellion headquarters, which led to the siege of the city and castle. This original fortification was abandoned after the garrison surrendered. Rufus requested that Gundulf, the Bishop of Rochester, construct a new stone castle at Rochester between 1087 and 1089. He defined the present size of the castle. Despite significant changes throughout the ages, several designs of Gundulf have survived. The castle was permanently given to the Archbishop of Canterbury by King Henry I in 1127. The enormous keep that still rules the castle today was constructed by William de Corbeil. The castle was under the care of archbishops during the 12th century. Later, when Rochester Castle was no longer needed, its materials were recycled elsewhere, and the Crown gave up custodianship. In the 1870s, the castle and its grounds were made public as a park. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, repairs were made at different times. As a Scheduled Monument and Grade I listed building, the castle is protected. The ruins are now accessible to the public and under the care of English Heritage. #History #Architecture #Castles
