The ruined Middleham Castle is located in Middleham, Wensleydale, in the English county of North Yorkshire. Robert Fitzrandolph, 3rd Lord of Middleham and Spennithorne, began construction on it in 1190. King Richard III spent very little of his reign in the castle, yet it was his childhood home. Although some have argued that the initial castle site was significantly more suitable for achieving this than the subsequent location, the castle was duly constructed to protect the road from Richmond to Skipton. The castle remained in royal possession following the passing of King Richard III until the 17th century, when it was let to fall into ruin. The other buildings of Middleham village made use of many of the stones of the castle. Although there is no proof of stonework or defensive structures at the location of the former castle, Middleham Castle was constructed close to the site of an earlier motte and bailey castle, the remains of which may still be seen nearby. According to historians, the defensive walls of the older castle were built of wood. The Neville family, whose most famous member was Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, a key player in the Wars of the Roses and dubbed the Kingmaker, acquired the new Middleham Castle in 1270. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, younger son of Richard, Duke of York, stayed in Middleham with Warwick family when his father died at Wakefield in December 1460. In 1469, Warwick captured his brother, King Edward IV, who was briefly held captive in Middleham. After Edward restored the crown after death of Warwick at Barnet in 1471, his brother Richard married younger daughter of Warwick, Anne Neville, and established Middleham as his primary residence. Richard later became King Richard III, yet during his two-year reign, he rarely or never visited Middleham. Henry VII took control of the castle when Richard died at Bosworth in 1485, and it stayed in royal hands until the reign of James I when it was sold. The castle is a compact, enormous structure, and while it is in ruin, the majority of its walls are still standing. The castle is a straightforward rectangle with a huge Norman keep encircled by a later curtain wall. Large, opulent residential ranges were later erected to the keep. #History #Architecture #Castles
