Situated on the Harewood Estate in Harewood, West Yorkshire, England, Harewood Castle is a 14th-century stone hall house and courtyard fortress. It is a grade I listed structure. The De Lisle family built the castle in the twelfth century, and after Sir William de Aldeburgh married Elizabeth de Lisle, heiress of Harewood, who was given permission to crenellate in 1366, it belonged to him. One can see the tower house for miles around, a rectangular structure on a steep slope. The chapel is located above the portcullis chamber, and the main two-story block is flanked by four angle towers, one of which is a simple entrance tower. The well is located in the barrel-vaulted basement of the four-story lower kitchen wing. The Ryther and Redmayne families, to whom the two daughters of second Baron Aldeburgh had married, inherited the castle after his death in 1391. Although financial condition of James Ryther must have gotten worse because he eventually passed away in Fleet Prison of London in 1595, he and his companion William Plompton actually purchased the Redman family in 1574. In order to pay off debts, his son and two daughters sold the castle to Sir William Wentworth of Gawthorpe Hall in 1600; this is most likely when Harewood Castle stopped being a primary residence. After being abandoned in the 1630s, the castle was listed for sale in 1656. #History #Architecture #Castles
